Volume 67 published

Volume 67 in our series, The Quarter Sessions Order Book, 1642-1654, was published in late 2014. A transcription of the first of a long order books of the Wiltshire Quarter Sessions, it shows how the county was governed at a local level through the tumultuous period of the Civil War and the early years of the Commonwealth. The administrative work of the justices of the peace was wide ranging: from overseeing the provision of basic social welfare, as laid down by the Poor Laws, and giving financial assistance to those who suffered losses through fire or other disasters, and injured (Parliamentarian) soldiers and their dependants, to ensuring roads, bridges, and gaols were maintained.

Copies may be purchased for £20 + £2.80 p+p in the UK (please enquire for overseas rates) from the Honorary Secretary, Helen Taylor, via email or at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Cocklebury Road, Chippenham SN15 3QN; tel: 01249 705500.
