Volume 69 forthcoming

Excerpt from the opening page of the churchwardens' accounts of St Mary's Devizes, for the year 1633-4: Wiltshire & Swindon Archives, 189/2.Volume 69 in our series, The Churchwardens’ Accounts of St Mary, Devizes, 1633-89, will be published in June 2016. The period covered by these accounts coincides with a tumultuous episode in the ecclesiastical history of England, between the translation of William Laud to the archbishopric of Canterbury and the passing of the Act of Toleration. They therefore provide important evidence for the study of religious practice in 17th-century Wiltshire. They are also a rich source for the social and economic history of the county, giving insight into the daily life of an important provincial town, and brimming with data about wages, prices, rents, and taxes. The parish was a landlord in its own right, and the history of its estate has been traced from the middle ages to the modern day. An appendix identifies and details each of the urban properties belonging to the church.

The volume will be launched at the AGM, to be held at St Mary’s church in Devizes, on Saturday 25 June. Copies will be available for collection or purchase at the AGM. After publication, copies will be available for purchase from the Honorary Secretary, Helen Taylor for £20 + £2.80 p+p in the UK (please enquire for overseas rates). Please contact the secretary via email or at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Cocklebury Road, Chippenham SN15 3QN; tel: 01249 705500.
